Sky Savona (00:00.088) Are you searching for your business on Google and your website's not showing up? Whether you're typing your name, your service, or your city, and your site is nowhere to be found. This is one of the most common frustrations that most business owners have. Today, I'm going to break down the four biggest reasons why your website may not be showing up on Google search. Why your traffic might be down, and exactly how to fix it. number one, indexing issues. Google cannot rank a website that it cannot see. Indexing is basically Google's big library system. When your website first is published, Google sends out things like crawlers and anticipates a site map for your website. That way it can properly index it. So if your website's not indexed, means that Google. doesn't even know that you exist. To fix this, make sure that you've submitted your website to Google Search Console. It's a free tool that takes a little bit of setting up to do, but once you're logged in and your site is attached, you have your dashboard there. In there, you can add your proper site map. I know this is getting a little technical here, but if you go into Google Search Console, there is a section that shows you what pages are indexed, and it will oftentimes give you the pages that they found that have not been indexed. For example, I've launched a website and then I took it down. and relaunched a new website with the same domain and it said it couldn't find six pages. That's because that was the old website that it had previously indexed. So you don't have to worry about those. Just make sure it is indexing each page on your website that is live. So as far as steps go, we would go to Google Search Console, create an account, upload or generate a free XML sitemap with xml-sitemaps.com or via your CMS. Also, you can use the search tool in Google Search Console and use the URL inspection tool to request indexing. I suggest you do this Sky Savona (01:41.626) after you upload your own site map. Reason two, weak SEO signals. If you're not sure what SEO is, it's search engine optimization. SEO is basically like helping Google understand what it is that you do as your business, and that way it can translate it to the rest of us. So let's say that your website is indexed. It may not be ranking because it lacks authority. You need strong SEO basics like keyword rich pages, not keyword stuffed pages with proper titles, meta tags, proper semantic HTML, a fast loading speed, Google really prioritizes this, mobile-friendly version, and backlinks from credible sources. To check this, you want to check your titles and meta descriptions on each page. You can test mobile-friendliness by honestly checking it out yourself first. making sure that it doesn't scroll side to side, it loads properly and fast, but also there are free tools. One of my favorite tools is Google's Page Speed Insights. I love this. You can honestly just type your URL in there and it's going to give you a mobile and desktop version of your results. Sometimes the speed of the page is hindered by big images. For image size, we really want to aim for 100 KB as far as how big the file should be, not gigabytes. If you must for bigger pictures that are more important for clarity, we recommend somewhere around 100 to 300 KB. And for backlinks, make sure you are linking your website on the free pages like your Google Business page, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, and other social media profiles. Reason number three, technical or security issues. If your site is showing as non-secure, which means using HTTP instead of HTTPS or it loads painfully slow, Google will push your website down in the rankings. And here's the kicker. 53 %! Sky Savona (03:32.436) of mobile visitors, abandon a website if the site takes longer than three seconds to load. That's half your traffic gone before they even see your offer. Hey, I know our attention spans are low. I didn't think it was that bad. So what we want to do is check if your website has the HTTPS. The S is super, super important. If not, most hosts like IONOS and GoDaddy now offer free SSL certificates. You have to go in and enable it on your dashboard. I do this all the time with IONOS. I use the Starter Wildcard SSL certificate and it works perfectly fine. A side note on SSL certificates, if you have ever wondered why your mail typically ends up in spam if you're sending emails, check to make sure you have an SSL certificate. Oftentimes it's because your website is not secure, meaning that anything from that domain is not issued as secure in the eyes of the Internet. Now, let's move on. Again, we want to measure the page load speeds from the PageSpeed Insights from Google. It's such a fabulous tool. And if you don't want to use that one, you can also use Lighthouse, which shows and displays the same information, accessibility, SEO, performance, best practice usage, and it gives you a score from zero to 100. Now, let's say you made the website yourself on WordPress or something like that. If you have a lot of unused plugins, Delete the plugins that you're not using to lighten the load. So now on to number four, conversion and engagement signals. Google doesn't just want to know if your website exists. It wants to know if users are actually staying and engaging with your content. If your visitors click your website and immediately bounce because it's outdated, unclear, or not loading properly, or not accessible. Google assumes it's not a valuable website and visitors are ruthless. 88 % of users say they are less likely to return to a website after a bad experience. I mean, I know that I'm part of that 88%, so understood. So Google isn't just guessing when it's burying your website. It's not doing it intentionally. You just have to understand. Sky Savona (05:29.026) There's 1.2 billion websites on the entire planet. And to rank high on one and two, it takes a lot of work and it's reacting to real user behavior to what you're putting out in the world. So a free check we can do for this is take out your phone, open the homepage and can you tell in five seconds what it is you want your customer to do when they land? If not rewrite your headline. and have a clear call to action. If there's not a clear call to action, right in what we call the hero section, it becomes confusing and they tend to bounce from that website. We want one clear call to action, like book a call. Also a big one is you can use wave.webaim.org to run a free accessibility test. Now this is not the only test out there. I like Axe dev tools and Lighthouse does give you an overview, but there are a few tools out there to check your site for accessibility. You wanna fix the missing alternative test the low contrast and unusable forms. I am going to make a video more in depth about accessibility and why it is important to all of us. And something you can do for free is set up Google Analytics for free. So GA4 is what we call it. That monitors the bounce rate and other analytics and it's a free tool. It's not that difficult to install and it gives you lot of insights about what's going on with your users when they are showing up to your website. Now this is where most tutorials stop, but the truth is Fixing indexing in SEO is only half of the battle.
